Pregnancy and Having Asthma - Should I Be Worried?

When an asthmatic becomes pregnant they may naturally worry about the effect the medicines that they regularly take to manage their asthma could be having on their unborn child.

The good news is that the common allergy and asthma medicines are known to be very safe during pregnancies. It can't hurt to talk with your doctor, but you can relax.

It is especially important that there is effective asthma control during pregnancy and doctors will advise on any changes in medication that may be necessary.

If a change is required it will be from a newer medicine to an older tried and tested one.

The problem with newer drugs and medicines is that there is often no formal information about safety in pregnancy, because women who are or might become pregnant are not allowed to take part in the trials during the testing of the drugs or medicines for fear of harming the baby (and facing massive lawsuits as a result).

Therefore if a patient is at all worried about a medicine they are currently taking a doctor will recommend an older more established alternative.

These older asthma treatment medicines exist; have been used for many decades, and long before the thalidomide catastrophe taught us that unborn babies are especially at risk.

Many of these older asthma treatments have been used during pregnancy for decades, and are known to be safe in pregnancy.

So you can relax, pregnant women are able to enjoy an asthma and allergy free pregnancy.
